Ha I had this issue once upon a time too! And the one above with the wifi driver b43-fwcutter. Apparently not great laptop choices. The touchpad situation was awful, because the sensitivity was always insane. IIRC I had a way to slow it down, but then it was so so slow that I had to go over it like 30 times to get across the diagonal. Good times.

I hate the idea that older kids shouldn’t do it. Like I remember getting shit when I decided to be kid-like again at 15 after not having done it when I was 13 and 14.

Houses told me I was too old. And looking back now, as a parent of teens, and I wish they and their friends were just going out trick r treating. I will definitely encourage any kid I see. And at my age anyone under 26 is a kid, easily. I’d much rather kids do something communal and fun than just go out drinking. I’m sure that by the next Halloween when I was 16 I was probably doing something less good than asking for free candy.

If we want people to be communal, have fun, and be safe then we shouldn’t give them shit when they do that. So all of Israel is a colonial state? What should happen with it and it’s over 9 million people? Of which almost half are middle eastern (I’m only including several generations middle eastern here, obviously we have people that are 3 or 4th generation Israeli, but I am not sure what your threshold is for being considered a native of an area). Then another 2.5 percent are beta Israel. So let’s just say half are middle eastern or African. What should happen with this colonial state?

While I won’t argue in support of the amount of force Israel is using, I am curious what you believe they should do. For this current situation and the whole situation at large.

I’ll be honest. Most Americans don’t even realize Roma are a real group of people. They hear gypsy and think crystal balls and magic. The population is much smaller and more integrated in the US than in Europe so many have never met someone from that group. But I mean if you want the honest answer, a person that looks white in America is considered white until a reason is given otherwise. Maybe a name. Maybe a symbol. Maybe they say something. My youngest son can pass for white easily. Asheknazi jews are white by current american standards, but I don’t see white southern baptists churches needing armed security during service. And I’m one generation shy of when Jews weren’t allowed in to certain places.

Race is weird in America. And Americans are very touchy about it on both sides. I think it’s because it’s built on a house of cards, but so many fundamental things revolve around it. Racial justice on the left. Umm… other things on the right. Like racism is definitely real. I can make it through police checkpoints without getting stopped, while my wife gets stopped every time. But Americans like to pretend there is some true hard standard when it is all a wobbly social construct.

And my questions on race and who qualifies as white? Because I’m guessing you consider yourself a very anti-racist person. But that shit was racist as fuck.

Jews have had people there pretty much that entire time. Under the Roman empire, under the Byzantine, under Arabs, under the Ottoman empire, under the British empire.

You seem to know very little about the region. The way you speak of race is certainly American. Not sure how you think the Polish, much less Polish Jews, were treated in the past, but I can assure you it wasn’t as a white person.

Further, the Sephardi chief rabbi is middle eastern by any definition (born in Israel, parents born in Iraq). The Ashkenazi chief rabbi is the son of a polish born Holocaust survivor.

There are at least 3.2 Mizrahi Jews in Israel although recent studies suggest around 44% of the population. That means Jews from Israel or the surround middle eastern areas. Are middle easterners white now?

Jews might be considered white in America (sometimes). But what is white in America does not apply to the rest of the world. Even Europe doesn’t share the same attitude, I assure you.

It didn’t start as a European settler project. Europe was in control of the region post WWI so Jews lobbied in Europe and in the US. Many of which were Mizrahi and/or already having lived in mandate Palestine.

I’m sure you don’t even realize what you’re saying is racist, but it is. If a person with black parent(s) can pass as white, are they also white? Is their a paper bag test for Jews too? What about one drop? Are all Africans black? Do you know what an average person from Yemen looks like? Egypt? Why didn’t Polish and German Jews just be pretend not to be Jewish during the Holocaust since they are white?

Since the human population shares at least two common areas that all current humans came from, how many generations must a group of people exist in a place to say they are descendants of that place? If a person is a jew by birth through European heritage, but is blacker than Obama, and moves to Israel are they a white European Jew or a black minority? Is Bashar al-assad white? Viktor Orban? Gabriel Boric?

How is following the laws that Catalunya agreed to using a fascist construct? 95.5% of Catalunyans voted in favor of the constitution that enshrined them as part of Spain. They were given certain autonomous controls, that were later expanded giving them more control and most of the people didn’t even bother to vote on it.

So explain to me, how this is fascist? Because I suppose you believe Lincoln was a fascist too then.

You clearly have no clue what you’re talking about. These protests are about people being angry that Sanchez might offer amnesty to those catalunyans who broke the law by having an illegal rather than legal referendum.

Most people didn’t support the referendum, it had already been ruled illegal, and only those that were separatist voted.

Again, you do not understand how a multi party parliament works. Sanchez didn’t really lose the election. The left wing parties got as many seats as the right wing parties with the junts sitting in the middle as mild king makers (they cannot help the right, they can only cause another election in which they will likely get wiped out).

And again, if Sanchez and the PSOE do not form a government but the PP and Vox do, then Spain will be ruled by an authoritarian ultra right nationalist party that has stated they intend on putting more national police and Guardia civil in Catalunya to prevent even protests.

Yet somehow, in all your political wisdom, are angry that Sanchez might give assistance to the people in trouble for having the referendum and thus he should be ousted so that the fascists can come in to power?

There is a legal path required in the constitution with which Catalunya can have a referendum. It is a high bar and involves support from more than just the people actively living there (as they are currently part of Spain and those Spaniards also have a vested interest in major changes to their country). People should really stop acting like this is some authoritarian regime and that they totally understand this Catalunya situation.

You people cheering on the separatists are also big fans of Brexit right? I’m not in Catalunya so it wouldn’t impact me much. Might make my property value go way up as people flee if they did actually leave. But it would be a disaster for them worse than Brexit for the UK. And it is being pushed in a very similar us vs them rhetoric.

Personally, while I am in Spain, I don’t have strong feelings about the amnesty. On the one hand, they knew they were breaking the law and I’m all for corrupt politicians from any party being put in prison. I would also like the heavy handed cops that got violent during the illegal referendum to be punished as well.

This is tankie garbage. Syngman Rhee was certainly horrible. But he was not instated. He was voted in. He had a very long history of being in Korean politics. He was certainly given a boost by the Americans. But he was also given a boost by Kim refusing to participate in the elections.

And let us not pretend that the soviets and Chinese involved were just liberators. They had their own political games they were playing and boosted Kim just as much. The elections in the north were completely controlled by the soviets. And you gripe about the presence of American troops, but support the Chinese troops in the north.

The north didn’t invade for fun. The north invaded because Kim thought he could have even more power and that the US would not intervene. He was wrong. He would have been completely removed had it not been for the Chinese.

Both sides had imperialistic outside support from corrupt governments. Both sides used totalitarianism to maintain control. One side is currently the most inhumane country on the planet and the other has a modern standard of living. To say the south was worse in a very short time period is ridiculous. In reality, due to the harsh restrictions and cult of personality in the north we do not even really know how bad the north was. The standard of living may have been better, but concerning totalitarian governments it is impossible to say.

You’re fucking kidding right? Spanish is the second most spoken language in the US. It is the second largest first language as well. It is the second largest monolingual language.

I’m all for multiculturalism. I’m an immigrant. But let us not live in a pretend world.

So you’d be cool with people doing this in Spanish on Texas and Florida beaches right? And I mean people should definitely never travel to a foreign place without a decent grasp of the local language. Not like world exploration is something that can be a life altering experience. Or could help people empathize with different types of culture. Nope. Everyone should stay in their own little bubble. And honestly that applies to states, districts, etc. Hell even towns. Because Alabama and California are super different and have different customs. But even Houston and Austin Texas are way too different to go into each other’s areas without having a firm grasp on local customs. Barcelona and Aragon are so very different that many of them don’t even speak the same language. One of my neighbors and I don’t get along real well. Perhaps we should really only stay in our houses.
