What exactly do you like about X11?
That it works just fine for my purposes. When it does not I will switch to Wayland but I have no reason to at the moment.

Lynx 4 Life!
I suggest trying Cinnamon and see how it feels. Unless your old notebook has less than 2GB RAM then you will probably be aok. I have run it on some pretty weak machines before and never found XFCE to be noticeably snappier.
87€ does not include case, power supply, or microSD. Realistically close to 120€ to get a working system and for that kind of money yes you can get a newish Celeron powered PC with 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD/NVME.
I am doing conversion from Canadian Dollar so my calculations and what is actually available in Europe might be off a bit. It is totally possible here though.
Slackware(1995?), Yggdrasil, Redhat/Fedora/Mandrake, SuSE, Debian/Ubuntu/Mint
Probably some others I have forgotten, and there was a lot of back and forth at various times but I settled on Debian based because at the time APT was the best package manager. I mostly use Mint or straight Debian now because familiarity makes it the simplest for me after all these years.
not Linux but also Solaris, SunOS, & AIX
I am sure you can, but you will likely get better performance from a mini PC for roughly the same price.
Seriously. I think I installed my first Linux Firmware almost 20yrs ago on a WRT54G.

IIRC part of that issue was that the Windows version of the same computer was cheaper because of MS licensing. For Linux nerds at the time it made more sense to buy the Windows version and do what they had always done, reinstall with the Linux of their choice.
However, once the prompt to upgrade to Windows 11 appears, 99% will click “yes” and
be informed that their computer does not support Win11
and forget about it.
Professional encoders who fully understand the encoders and the schemes in use and care about not seeing artifacting or low quality would never intentionally go as low as 300mb for a feature length movie of even an hour. Yes there are people who do such things but they’re not well regarded and it won’t look even passable on anything larger than a phone screen.
This has not been well regarded since the days when DivX ruled the pirate scene, and even then cramming a film onto a 600MB CD left a lot to be desired.
Like it or not Wayland is going to be the future of Desktop Linux. Preparing for that future is a good thing.
Stop trying to make Fetch happen…
or something more cheerful like GladOS
Mint has been my goto desktop distro for many years now. It is everything Ubuntu used to be. For servers Debian is the answer.
For those that prefer non-debian based Linux then Fedora variants are the way to go.
is this like psDooM where I can hunt down and shoot processes on my system?
Also, while it may be fairly easy to recreate the OS/Application install from scratch that is generally small potatoes storage wise compared to you music/movies/photos etc that you for sure want to back up.
Seems like you will get a biased sample here…
