Not really faux pas per se, but I have a very minor condition that makes my walking look slightly uncomfortable. I can either walk with very much tolerable pain or look a tiny bit funny. I am always self aware of it.
Big part of me loving selfhosting stuff is that I get to learn things a lot. I think it’s pretty amazing that these sort of projects exist but I’ll always use good ol’ $BASIC_SERVER_OS

Be careful, outbound traffic from VPS to client is can be expensive.
PC with phone capability: this is already very much a thing.
Desktop OS + mobile formfactor: this can be done, but I’m not sure how it’s any different from what we have right now, especially if you use Android.
Kindle (Paperwhite). Never registered since I bought it, never will. Not once did it touch any network. I only use Calibre to manage books.

Every single (opensource) automated location tracker I’ve tried drained battery to the point where it is borderline useful.
Your best bet is to use something like Immich like others mentioned but it lacks specific business data like Google Timeline has, which I don’t think it’s possible with anything else.
