Years and years ago I built my own 16 bit computer from the nand gates up. ALU, etc, all built from scratch. Wrote the assembler, then wrote a compiler for a lightweight object oriented language. Built the OS, network stack, etc. At the end of the day I had a really neat, absolutely useless computer. The knowledge was what I wanted, not a usable computer.
Building something actually useful, and modern takes so much more work. I could never even make a dent in the hour, max, I have a day outside of work and family. Plus, I worked in technology for 25 years, ended as director of engineering before fully leaving tech behind and taking a leadership position.
I’ve done so much tech work. I’m ready to spend my down time in nature, and watching birds, and skiing.
Some suggestions, either online or local;
Bookclubs
Walking groups
Chess, board games, table top
Theater groups (meetup groups to go to the theater as a group)
Escape room group meetups.
Depending on if you are in a city or a smaller town the locals options will vary. I’d look at meetups site and browse local activities. For most any activity you will find a range of ages, but some will skew more one way than another.

The article says that steam showing a notice on snap installs that it isn’t an official package and to report errors to snap would be extreme. But that seems pretty reasonable to me, especially since the small package doesn’t include that in its own description. Is there any reason why that would be considered extreme, in the face of higher than normal error rates with the package, and lack of appropriate package description?
When writing basic business code, structuring the code well and having good naming standards means you shouldn’t need a ton of comments, but you should still have some. Plus, using structured function content blocks gives you intellisense in some languages and IDEs, which is important for code reuse in teams.
However, when I was doing scientific programming I’d have comments for almost every line at times where I put the mathematical formula and operations the line represents. Implementing a convolution neutral network with parameters to dynamically scale the layers or MPI stochastic simulations is much different than writing CRUD functions or basic business logic.
For the lay person:
It’s like if you could see Twitter threads and Reddit posts on your Facebook in a single feed, and choose between them which set of rules, interfaces, and styles you prefer. Since everything shares content, it is easier for new sites to open which helps keep the user experience competitive.
I got into computers at a young age in the early 90s. You couldn’t really do much without getting knowledgeable. I learned basic and then assembler to follow along with magazines that shipped game code for you to follow along with. I later went on to build my own 16 bit computer out of NAND gates, including ALU, wrote a rudimentary compiler, network stack, and OS, etc. Very primitive but functional. I really just wanted to figure out how it all worked through the full stack, and get my games working along the way.
I eventually learned more languages and launched a career in IT and moved through just about every role. Picked up a math degree along the way to help. Was a system programmer on an IBM zos mainframe using C, natural, and assembler. Was a.net developer for a while, an enterprise DBA, cloud and network engineer, and then eventually exited the technical career through management.
So I guess I just always was interested in how computers worked, and getting my games working. I left the technical roles one I felt I had figured out all that I really needed to and went on to other challenges. Still play games and tinker with my own projects though.
Not the person you asked, but I have the same general sense that most women would not find it a positive thing to list. Without making broad unsupported generalizations about women, I would suggest:

I would suggest that listing broad categories of things you like is probably better than an individual thing. E.g., saying you like reading and listing a few authors isn’t weird, but listing one single book seems a little obsessed.
I really enjoyed Stephen Fry’s Greek mythology audiobooks. He wrote three, basically a modern editorial of the mythology cleaned up a little bit and presented as a more linear sequence of events. He did the golden and silver ages, followed by the Trojan war.
I also really enjoyed Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, narrated by himself. They are all easy to follow, and entertaining. Neil Gaiman’s book isn’t particularly to ribald as far as mythology goes, and my kids loved listening to it in the car.
Edit: also from the young adult section, Abhorsen and Sabriel are on audible narrated by Tim Curry, who makes them a hoot. Don’t recommend the other two as much. The books weren’t as good and they aren’t narrated by Tim Curry.
I agree. Unfortunately many folks who are attracted to security issues and topics don’t have a great holistic view of things. The idea of security is that something can go wrong and you are still ok, and that you apply context appropriate measures. Of course sending a password through email isn’t good, but it’s a gaming forum. A security conscious individual should have randomly generated passwords for everything and no reuse. Likewise, it wasn’t a bank or a security company, it was an old forum software for public discussions, so contextually this isn’t a top concern.
The cherry on top is that it appears to have been an old screenshot and already addressed.

I don’t know your age, health, etc, but there are lots of reasons we hurt other than age. Ergonomics, repetitive stress injuries, regular old injuries. It doesn’t take much to compound these issues into something that interferes with your life.
I spent the last twenty years sleeping on a mattress that wasn’t right for my sleep style. It didn’t feel great sleeping on my side and it has a slight divot. I didn’t wake up in pain, but it definitely impacted the quality of my sleep.
I recently moved and bought a new tempurpedic. I went in, went through a calibration test of sorts and tried the top recommended matches. Ended up buying the top match, which was way expensive, but I now consistently get the quality of sleep I used to get at best once a week.
Two things: the mattress was $3k, and I still have chronic shoulder pain I manage with home physical therapy.
I guess my point is, the best mattress won’t fix a problem not caused by a bad mattress. You might need PT, stretching, or some other physical routine to help manage your particular pain, just like I have special exercises for my shoulder that if I stop, it will start hurting again and prevent me from sleeping on my side, no matter the mattress.
So before you throw down money on a mattress, make sure you rule other reasonable things out, and make sure you understand the return policy. E.g., of you remove the tags you can’t return, of there is any discoloration, no return, etc. Just make sure you have the details down pat.

Truly a great book that has been influential in how I approach presenting material to other people and in making sense of the world. Daniel and his long standing research partner received the Nobel prize in economics with there work in behavioral psychology. The book teaches you how people think, make decisions, and process information.
Antifragile, nassim taleb.
I won’t say much other than to make a counterpoint. As much as I enjoyed the book and his presentation and arguments around making systems antifragile, his witing can be summarized by a quote from Dr. Tetlock: “His witing is like a fine French meal, gently dusted with shit.” Taleb is a bit up his own ass at times, but antifragile is imo his best work.
Superforcasting, Phillip Tetlock.
Great book on how to quantify the chance of future events. Famously feuding with nassim taleb, though really it’s more taleb feuding with anyone who has different ideas than him.
Man’s search for meaning, Victor frankl.
One of the most interesting, heart wrenching and warming books. Whether you subscribe to his exact philosophies, frankl is a wonderful read.
The better angels of our nature, Steven pinker.
Probably the most exhaustively assembled academic book I’ve ever read on the trends of progress.
Origin story, David Christian.
An excellent history of everything with a focus on the repeating patterns of humanity trending towards more complex social interactions. Am easy and enjoyable read.
That’s really interesting given what I mentioned in my other comment about plateauing at 4k calories/day when I was on a running challenge. Once I tracked about 4k calories burned, my energy level would just plummet.
I mean, maybe you exaggerate to make a point but there are practical limits to what you can exercise your way out of. I set a challenge to myself to jog a half marathon every day for a year. From January 2022 through January 2023 I jogged 22km a day seven days a week for 367 days. I also did light weights and exercises for my upper body. I burned around 4000/day, as best as I can track with my Garmin watch. Which throw in a couple of milkshakes and you can blow through 5k calories in a day.
I will say, I did struggle to keep my weight up with such a regimen and a fairly healthy diet and dropped to 150lbs at my lowest (6’2"tall). But if I wanted to eat more calories I could easily get there with fried food and ice cream.
Edit: and for most people this is completely infeasible. Most people don’t have the time flexibility to wake up at 4 am every day and put on those kinds of miles.
Just moved into a house with ac for the first time and it is well insulated and lots of shade from trees. At night before bed I set it to 68, and in the morning I set it to 74. Even when we had 100 degree days it never got above 73 inside, so basically I only run the AC at night.
I’m sure you mean all the heights are a little different, but I’m envisioning where every step has to be taller than the previous one and the shenanery that would happen to make long stair cases navigable. Start with teeny tiny steps to end with uncomfortably large ones.
These sort of thought experiments are helpful to drive home the point that in creating public policy, sometimes you do need a way to quantify the value of human life, which gets to the ugly truth that we do value lives differently everyday in society. ER triage will save the sickest person first, all else being equal. But when things get swamped children often get prioritized up. We value young life more. The trolley problem forces the concept of assigning value to life and taking action based on that.
This second problem doesn’t do so as cleanly. In my opinion, the right answer is to let them riot, but also alert the police and seek to mitigate the harm they cause. This problem feels less about the quantification of human life than about moral culpability of actions. The trolley is acting as it must die to physics. It isn’t good or evil and has no agency. On the second problem, the rioters have agency, are choosing to do evil, and should be fought against.
Just my quick take though.
