also lead mining/production is not waste free in of itself
DEAD ACCOUNT. Lemmy.one does not have active administration and I need to move on. Catch me over at dbzer0: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/u/empireOfLove2
Yet another Reddit refugee from the great 3rd party app purge of 2023. Obligatory fuck /u/Spez.

Recommends Installing Linux
*through Windows
You’re helping the planet too. The most environmentally friendly appliance in the world is the one that’s already built!
I pirate damn near every piece of media I consume.
I also have my automatic 401k contributions at work cranked up to like 15%. I never see the money in my bank account so I don’t even think about it and force myself to fit into a smaller budget- which is the best way to save.
Oh great here they come again to defend themselves, good job
To answer your question, NO, they are not. Stupid and completely lacking in historical, economic, or political nuance? Yes, but that’s a separate problem and not “conservative” in the slightest.
Most distros, at least mainstream ones, will happily install right alongside Windows and give you the option to boot from either Linux or Windows when you start your PC.
Basically, there is a “boot loader” that the motherboard finds on the hard drive when the PC starts up and tells it to load the OS. The bootloader handles getting the OS kernel out of the hard drive and into memory with the correct drivers so the kernel can take over. Windows has its own bootloader that can only boot Windows. Linux also has a boot loader called “GRUB” that can boot multiple operating systems located in different partitions on your hard drive as long as it knows where they are.
You’ll have to first shrink your Windows partition using the Disk Management tool from inside windows so that there is “unused” space on your hard drive not occupied by the Windows file system. Then run your Linux bootable USB and it will take up that space to install Linux. Any normal distro like Ubuntu/Debian/Mint et al. will set up GRUB automatically to recognize both Linus and Windows, and you’ll be off to the races.
However, if you just want to play with Linux before you commit to faffing about in your partition tables, most distros can also run in a “live USB” state where it loads the basics of the OS directly from a USB stick into memory, no installation required. I highly recommend doing this first!
Damn wonder wha happened to all those ethnic Kurds in your country, eh? Projection thru and thru
With the preface of “cheap”, do not ever buy a laptop under $500. They are simply underspecced by the time they get that low, and will give a bad experience.
I would also recommend something like a Lenovo ThinkPad, they are pretty damn tough. Maybe a ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 Intel. Spec it out to 16gb of memory and even the i3 processor will get your job done fine in Linux, while landing in under $650. Plus they have removable M.2 SSD’s that can be changed out for a higher capacity very easily, and much much cheaper than the $300 they charge to kit it with a 1tb drive…

but if your home is uninhabitable, insurance should pay for any accomodations while you are waiting for your home to be fixed.
Bold of you to assume that any insurance company will keep operating in wildfire interface areas within the next 5 years. They’ve already been cancelling tens of thousands of policies in California over it and it’s coming to your area next.
Reminder that insurance companies are in the business of collecting premiums, not paying out coverage. They will fuck you over at a moment’s notice no matter how long you’ve paid into their system.
I always hate the auto greeting and avoid the one McDonalds near me that uses it. 90% of the time it finishes with “we are ready to take your order!” But everyone on the other end is busy because theyre understaffed, and won’t actually take your order if you just blurt it out and then you gotta restart anyway.
It likely will be. The Linux kernel supports a surprising number of devices.
If your camera supports removing the SD card then you have a for-sure guaranteed way of getting data out of it. Built in card readers are typically much faster than USB2.0 anyway, and USB3 universal ones are cheap.
I have a very old GoPro Hero 3 Black. It exposes itself as a MTP device to any Linux install I’ve used and have no problems getting videos off it.
It doesn’t really have any other features than that, other than WiFi viewing which is only available via their android app anyway, so i don’t care.
I use it for car and offroading stuff.
Yayyyyyy American puritanism!
so if they’re not stupid enough to drive a huge part of their userbase away from their shithole to sites like lemmy and turn into digg 2.0
HAHAHAHAHHA oh man that’s funny
That’s the point.
Advertisers hate porn. Anything that’s not safe and broad-appeal is bad for their image.
its a nazi troll account doing nazi troll things
I was already entertaining the idea of a Lemmy switch after they announced the imminent death of my beloved RiF. Lemmy was mentioned many many times in the 3rd party app threads discussing the api changes.
They went ahead and hastened my transition by permabanning me (and two of my alts) for “report abuse” since I dared to regularly report all the obvious spam bots that filled so many subs. Meh. I could have made more alts but really just didn’t give a fuck at that point. Sure hope Spez’s pedo ass enjoys his already failing IPO.
Yes it is, but with extra Microsoft!
Jpg at 70% will lose a significant amount of detail. It is a “lossy” format, you cant judt compress data for nothing.
AVIF is significantly more efficient than jpeg, so it loses less image data for higher compression (smaller file sizes).
JXL supports both lossy and lossless compression, and is supposed to be more efficient yet over AVIF. However it’s got proprietary all over it because Google et al. For thst alone I would shy away from JXL and go AVIF.
