People really don’t seem to understand that in the electronics world, one single millimeter can make worlds of difference.

You absolutely can cram so much more stuff in “dumber” electronics, but phones are even more constricted in design, because they need to send and receive signals of different types, so feedback and signal noise are concerns.

Adding in even slightly more space allows for much better design, because you have more tolerances to reduce signal noise. It allows dozens of wires for camera sensors to route better. A 20% longer battery life. Heck, just being slightly more ergonomic and less droppable is a bonus to slightly thicker phones.

I didn’t even consider signal noise until I got into fpv drones and rc stuff, it can mame a ton of difference if you have a single wire 2mm out of place. (and crash your drone because the motor interfered with your antenna)

I think I’ve said this before to you a few weeks ago, and I totally understand that it’s easier said than done to cut family off, but your family are negative influences in your life and on your psyche, and you should be ignoring their bullshit and get away from them.

Honestly I barely talk to my immediate family, about 60/40 because we live under one roof, and most of our communication is just sharing memes anyway.

The only relatives I care about are three democrats that realize capitalism is a problem and the rich are the true enemies of the people. The rest are all corpo-throating republicans.

And even when I was younger and dumber/more “conservative” , I still didn’t care to keep in touch with them. Just never really cared to.

Wanted to go to a trade school for welding when I was a teenager. Mother said no, because “you’re going to college”

I kept asking for help figuring out college stuff, mother kept saying “I’ll help you tomorrow/next week when I have time” (she was technically a substitute teacher but usually worked 1 day/wk)

Graduation came and went and I had no money saved up, no colleges looked at beyond what my limited googling skills could come up with, and absolutely no help from my parents with anything.

Good news though, since my parents collectively made enough money, I didn’t qualify for financial aid of any kind! Did I say good news? I meant bad.

And of course my parents lived paycheck to paycheck and we got EBT or medicaid for most of my childhood.

Now instead of an education or a trade that’s in demand, I have depression and a shitty 15/hr job that is destroying my joints.

I mean, half of my hammers have had their handles remade with whatever hardwood was closest. So I’m gonna go with those.

However, the most complex thing that I can repair with sourced parts would be either my truck, or my truck. I’ve had to fix it with “close enough” parts before, and I will fix it until the frame rusts (which given Northern states and salted roads probably won’t be more than a few more years)

There’s a smattering of electronics that I’ve seen mentioned multiple times as well.

One thing that is theoretically repairable, but is hard to find parts for, my washing machine. It’s a old 50s model with a lever to engage the motor, a roller on top to squeeze water out, and a simple steel gear system to drive everything. I should be able to open it up with a crescent wrench and flat head screwdriver, but I doubt I will ever be able to find ready-made parts (I have looked briefly when I thought I had a problem with it that sorted itself) but I might be able to bodge some things together if needed.

The first time I heard that as a teenager, I made sure nobody ever felt comfortable saying it around me again.

Some mild stripping, knocked over glassware, and “speaking in tongues” later, sorry god made me do it.

If I had the money and ability to trust strangers I would hire people to clean my house for me.

I ask a bunch of questions because I’ve forgotten half the answers already and am trying to make enough stick that I can make something close enough they don’t notice my attention is wandering while they blather.

I tested this with my Facebook app in 2013. Found a Spanish radio station, set my phone down next to it overnight, and for several weeks I was seeing ads exclusively in Spanish. Deleted the app the first day I saw them in Spanish, and deleted my account not long after that.

My wife still uses them after 5 years together and me pointing out all the times it’s obviously eavesdropping on us, and she’s even been creeped out by it before. Still uses it…

Unless my microphone and camera have physical switches, I will assume they are being used. Those little “your camera and microphone are off” icons in the corner of the screen don’t reassure me.

This is such a weird comment, full of “NiCd batteries aren’t good enough so solar/wind are useless because we can’t store the power” energy.

It’s a test reactor, it’s meant to be smaller than the “big boys”, and in a few years it’ll be smaller and more efficient.

Sure, it’s not going to singlehandedly power an entire country, but distributed power is better than localized. 1000 small reactors placed all over means less likelihood of system wide failure than a handful of large ones.
