If you want to try insulting someone because you are misunderstanding yourself, go somewhere else.

The irony of you throwing shade at me and then saying this is palpable. You really need to chill, bro. Here’s the main idea of my comment, reduced to its essence: “There are different ways of looking at it.” Unless you argue that such is not the case (which would be absurd, considering there are in fact different ways of looking at it), then I suggest you go find somewhere else to be an insufferable pedant and leave me alone. I’m not looking for an argument or debate.

So do you disagree that there are different ways of looking at it? That your perspective is the One Truth above all others?

Go back and read what I wrote again, slowly. Which part leads you to believe that “all [I’m] thinking about is how everything is an ad”? Because that’s not what I said.

I sort by new and all, and I’ve seen a lot of them, most of them coming from kbin. If you don’t frequently sort by new, they might get reported before you see them, and if you don’t subscribe to communities on kbin, you probably don’t see them at all.

There are different ways of looking at it. I used to be on r/hailcorporate in my reddit days, and one of the things we tried to highlight is how we sometimes passively advertise on behalf of corporations. For instance, I know people who will insist that blue Dawn™ is the best, even though its active ingredients are exactly the same in chemistry and amounts as some off brands. They’re de facto advertising on behalf of P&G.

There’s obviously a vast difference between this and a deliberate ad placed by a company, but I think it’s still important to point out when this happens. We are so immersed in corporate advertising that we become almost numb to it.

There’s definitely some information that I’ve shared that is probably not in my best interest, so I understand being the type of person who tells people almost anything. I’m pretty much an open book with close friends and family. It’s one reason I like to avoid sites like Facebook and use sites that emphasize anonymity more. Sometimes I have to keep myself safe from myself lol

I’m a big advocate of privacy, but it’s good to ask these questions. We shouldn’t shame people for asking.

You’d tell them because the law might not consider your activities illegal at this time. But what about trans kids? What about people who have abortions? Unfortunately, we can’t trust any state or legal system to continue to have our best interests in mind.

Better that we normalize a free and private internet now while we still have the privilege of saying “I’d tell them…” And if you’d tell them, then great! But that should be your choice, your agency. It shouldn’t be data that we expect to have collated about us just by visiting a site online.

I’d much rather see restrictions on using algorithms to recommend content, period. I have yet to be grateful for any algorithmically generated feed. It comes across as useless and annoying at worst, creepy and intrusive at best.

Better to have a forum with humans recommending things to each other that can be searched and sorted according to keywords and direct input from the users, according to our preferences.

Tbf many of us, myself included, had had a problem with the general reddit culture for a very long time (in my case dating back to 2011)

The API change and Sp*z’s libelous lies (egregious even by his abysmally low standards) finally gave me the motivation to leave, and I’m genuinely happy that I’ve never checked back on my old account (which is still up, but has been mostly scrubbed of content)

I do the same. I don’t have an established opinion on everything, and it can take some time to form one, so if someone presses me for an answer to, say, “What did you think of that movie?” shortly after I’ve left the cinema, it’s always “pretty good.”
