Once an end-to-end, encrypted, connection is established between a pair of peers then anything can be sent through it. The establishment proces is generally facilitated by a server of some description so neither peer needs to allow inbound connections. (I’m a long, long way from being an expert on this and happy to be corrected - but this seems like network fundamentals?)
This makes me so angry. I have a nice Sony TV that I paid a lot (for me) of money for in 2021. Since I bought it they’ve been sneeking in more and more ads - when I bought was just when they started with the viewing “recommendations” (even though the things they recommend were often on services I didn’t subscribe to), then some of the recommendations started to be for Kia cars etc. and now just last week we got a fucking full screen, with volume, ad for a McFlurry when we turned it on!
I’ll be pulling my old NVIDIA shield out soon. I’m hoping there is an ad free android tv I can flash onto it and put the TV permanently on HDMI 1.

Wow, that brings back memories. Slackware 3.x was my into to Linux in the '90s.
You’re probably about my age. I was just late getting into computers. First attempt at university was dumb terminals connected to some Unix host. Failed everything and dropped out. Went back a few years later and had 8086 based PCs booting DOS off diskettes.
Took a while, but I found “me”. Slackware 3.1 was 3 or 4 boxes of floppies if I remember correctly. A full box, or more maybe, for X!

Of course! It’s amazing how this stuff just flows from the keyboard when you’re typing in a shell window, but feels awkward when typing in a Lemmy comment.
Yep - I use Facebook and Instagram regularly. I spend a lot of time in both tapping on “hide this” or “show less of this” or “report and block user”, but I find it worth it for the interactions with some like minded people in hobby related groups. I’m aware of the privacy implications, but I figure I’ve been there for so long there’s not much more for them to learn about me. I use ad and tracker blocking to slow them down a little.
I’m the same. When I was recently buying some new wool socks the seller said something like “these are great - you can wear them for days without washing” and I thought that was gross - but he was right. I leave them loosely sitting on top of my boots to air overnight and they are ready for another day.
I’ve been using vim since it was just vi and I can’t even begin to think about using it on a virtual keyboard!

Well - I’m surprised. Dickies Canada customer care team actually replied and confirmed that “Genuine Dickies” (the brand sold at Walmart) is not genuine Dickies - it’s a different brand and is lower quality.
I’m tempted to boycott them now for allowing their brand to be abused like that, but I said in my email to them that I’d try real Dickies if they confirmed there is a difference - so I will.
That’s interesting, and what I suspected. All of mine (4 pairs in total so far) have come from the local Walmart. I’ve just written to Dickies Canada customer support to see if they will confirm this. Unlikely, but worth a try. I’ve worded it like “I’m not happy with your pants from Walmart - should I try some from dickies.ca or move to another brand”. I’ll let you know if I get anything back.
Wow - $230 a pair (with tax and shipping). Do you get 8+ years from them?? I do like the look of them though - the front pockets look big enough that you can get things out while wearing gloves?
I keep seeing good things about the Duluth Fire Hose Flex. Just been on their site and the “free shipping for orders over $50” seems to include Canada, so they’re only about twice as much as the Dickies. I wonder if I can get four years out of a pair :-)

I think that “1” says they did **not **do well on crotch tearing. They stand up remarkably well for other abrasion - I’ve been rebuilding a foundation and spending a lot of time crawling around under an old shed - the knees still look like new!
