If you just want it for emergency purposes or irrigation, rain water harvesting can be fairly cheap and easy. Even a proper cistern, with a pump, and plumbed into your house is probably cheaper than whole-house off-grid solar. Probably want good filters for PFAS though.

Smarttube works well on my android TV. Comes with adblock and sponsorblock enabled. I’d bet my TV is spying on me in some way, so yeah, PC and TV disconnected from the Internet would probably be better.
They wouldn’t against Israel, for the same reasons they wouldn’t against the U.S. if the U.S. did the same. I’m pretty sure the U.S. is violating international law ATM in regards to the border they share with Mexico, and I expect no action will be taken against them.

Stuff that is used and immediately disposed of like trash bags, paper towels, and toilet paper. You need to be a little more careful with the cheapest trash bags and toilet paper, but it will still get the job done.
It’s good at refactoring smaller bits of code. The longer the input, the more likely it is to make errors (and you should prefer to start a new chat than continue a long chat for the same reason). It’s also pretty good at translating code to other languages (e.g. MySQL->PG, Python->C#), reading OpenAPI json definitions and creating model classes to match, and stuff like that.
Basically, it’s pretty good when it doesn’t have to generate stuff that requires creating complex logic. If you ask it about tasks, languages, and libraries that it has likely trained a lot on (i.e. the most popular stuff in FOSS software and example repos), it doesn’t hallucinate libraries too much. And, GPT4 is a lot better than GPT3.5 at coding tasks. GPT3.5 is pretty bad. GPT4 is a bit better to Copilot as well.
Agree. Ever since they started lobbying politicians it’s been clear that “safety” is a just a pretext for regulatory capture.
I haven’t ran into a good use-case to try out server-less yet. Either cold starts would be a problem (for example, I have an endpoint that needs to load a 5GB model into RAM, and it takes about 45 seconds). Or, it’s just much more expensive than a VPS if the service is projected to constantly serve many requests all day. Containerized services on a VPS doesn’t require much server maintenance (unless you have a dozen or so micro-services, then yeah, Kubernetes maintenance adds a lot of overhead).

They’re not really neighbors. Gaza is more like a prison controlled by Israel. Israel has controlled Gaza’s electricity, food, water, and the movement of its citizens for many years. I believe even before this attack, Israel only allowed Gaza 4 hours of electricity per day.
Also, in 2019, the PM of Israel reportedly laid out a strategy to “bolster” Hamas and provide them funding to oppose the Palestinian Authority. Hamas, in its current form, would not have been possible without Israel creating the perfect conditions for terrorist organizations to thrive. Israel keeps the conditions so bad, the average age in Gaza is 18. So, half of those Palestinian death toll numbers we are seeing are likely children.
I think one of the main lessons from Nazi Germany (and various old psychological experiments), is that everyday, average, people are capable of horrifying acts. This is especially true for kids who haven’t fully developed empathy yet (this is one reason child soldiers are used, gangs are mostly children, etc).
I was around the same age as the poster when 9/11 happened, and had the same thoughts, and many of the kids I knew had the same thoughts as well. I lived in the “country” outside of an all-white, pretty racist, very small town and had christian fundamentalist parents; which probably shaped my views when I was a child. I remember once in school, we had to do a presentations, and one group of kids did a presentation about turning Afghanistan to glass; which got laughs and no reprimands from the teacher.
I really liked Speed Dreams when I played it years ago. Never heard anyone else talk about it. Warsow and Red Eclipse were also good.
I don’t really pirate much anymore, because I don’t consume much paid media anymore. Occasionally, if I really, really want to watch something on a platform that I don’t have a free subscription to (through a phone plan or isp), I will find a stream of it, but that is rare.
I justify it by generally not being on favor of modern IP laws. On a less ideological basis, fuck’em for making their content inaccessible. And from the current strikes, it looks like most of their talent doesn’t get much of a cut anyways.
I haven’t pirated a game in years, just because Steam is so convenient, and I can pay for more games than I have time to play. In the past, when I couldn’t afford all the games I had time to play, I would pirate them. I couldn’t afford them, so it was no “potential loss” for them anyways.
For software other than games, there is usually an adequate Free Software alternative, so I just use those. I am a developer, so sometimes I make small contributions on software I use a lot, and have a good understanding of.
Haven’t pirated music since big streaming services became available (first, Play Music, now Spotify). I do kinda feel bad that Spotify pays shit though. I would happily pay the artists directly if it was convenient.
Yeah, I remember reading about a whole family dying because a mother was running her car for heat in a closed attached garage. So, everybody died of carbon monoxide poisoning. I’m sure there were more deaths. Most people have all electric houses, so can’t heat or cook when power goes out. I was without power or water for about a week, but had a gas stove and drinking water stored (became a kinda “prepper” when covid first started).
Same in central Texas. Moved here from a northern state. It’s much different driving on an icy salted road than an icy road with no salt. Cars don’t rust though. Trees aren’t used to it either, and drop tons of branches if we get freezing rain, causing vehicle and home damage and power outages. The energy grid and water systems aren’t made to handle cold weather either. Though, the energy grid and water systems can barely handle hot weather and droughts.
What? I installed Debian last week, and I think it took something like 4 clicks, and setting my username and passwords. I installed it because I couldn’t get Ubuntu or OpenSuse to install (guessing because I have a 3090 GPU paired with an old intel 4770k/Z97 chipset).
I’ve never had suspend work correctly on Linux. It’s always been buggy in Windows as well. You can boot from SSDs about just as fast as waking from suspend, so I don’t even try to use it anymore.
I don’t understand the Scrum one. Scrum is also agile with short development cycles, and prioritizes communication with the product owners and stakeholders.
I’ve never heard of lean development, but not a fan of “lean manufacturing,” at least not the way it’s commonly implemented in the U.S. (using primarily temp workers so they can ramp up and down their workforce as needed; and it also exacerbates supply-chain problems).
